Established in 1984, Big Bird Race is WWF-Hong Kong’s longest-running fundraising event. Funds raised directly contribute to the conservation and management of Mai Po Nature Reserve, a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Generating strong enthusiasm among bird-watchers locally and from overseas, the race has grown in the last three decades. Apart from the pure enjoyment of the competition, participants can also sharpen their bird-watching skills and improve their knowledge of birds. Read more

The ecology of the North American Great Lakes has been dramatically altered by the invasive zebra and quagga mussels. A key question is whether this biological change has altered whole-ecosystem biogeochemistry, in particular the cycling of phosphorus, a key nutrient that limits the biological productivity. Prof. Jiying Li, Assistant Professor of Ocean Science at HKUST and her collaborators constructed a mass balance model to evaluate the impact of the invasive mussels on the phosphorus cycle. Read more

An Interdisciplinary team consisting of two OCES and three CBE UG students won the Silver Award of the President’s Cup 2020 for their project “Real time Detection of Microplastics Using a Smart Fish Model”. Ms. Cherie Hiu Yu Leung (Life Science, Ocean Science) and Ms. Veronica Qin Ting Li (MPhil, Public Policy) of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have won The New York Times-APRU Asia-Pacific Student Case Competition. Their entry, entitled “Air Pollution in Hong Kong: A Market-Based Approach to Infrastructural Change” was published in the International Edition of The New York Times on 18 November 18 2019.
