Research

HKUST is one of the few universities in Southeast Asia, and the only one in Hong Kong, with an on-campus waterfront marine research facility (the Ocean Research Facility, OCRF). Our location at Clear Water Bay creates an exceptional opportunity in ocean and environmental research. It offers us immediate access to the rich biodiversity and relatively pristine marine environment of the eastern waters of Hong Kong (which is the field site of many of our marine research projects). The South China Sea, just a stone’s throw away from Clear Water Bay, has vast areas of under-investigated continental shelf and deep ocean for frontier research.

The Department emphasizes on building multi- and cross-disciplinary research and educational programs in Ocean Science and Technology. Our primary study sites include the estuarine environment of the Pearl River, the coastal bays of Hong Kong, and the deep sea (including the South China Sea). We have three main research foci:
