OCES and LIFS Undergraduate Students Received the Most Birds Seen 2nd Runner Up in the Big Bird Race Award 2021 (Professional Teams)

20.02.2021

Established in 1984, Big Bird Race is WWF-Hong Kong’s longest-running fundraising event. Funds raised directly contribute to the conservation and management of Mai Po Nature Reserve, a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Generating strong enthusiasm among bird-watchers locally and from overseas, the race has grown in the last three decades. Apart from the pure enjoyment of the competition, participants can also sharpen their bird-watching skills and improve their knowledge of birds.

HKUST Hoopoe Team (Team Name in Chinese: “科戴勝”) , formed by a BSc ENVS Year 4 student (LEE Hoi Kwong, Hugo) and a LIFS Year 4 student (YU Ho Bun, Orca) under a two-person team format in line with social distancing measures, competed in the Big Bird Race 2021 (Professional Race) on 20 February 2021(Saturday). Among 192 species identified during the 12-hour race period, this team has identified 122 species across Hong Kong’s bird-rich areas including Tai Po Kau, Long Valley and Mai Po.

We are pleased to announce that HKUST Hoopoe Team (“科戴勝”) has received the Most Birds Seen 2nd Runner Up (2 members) in the Big Bird Race Award (Professional Teams) this year.
