Abstract:

Global shallow water systems (e.g., coastal waters, inland rivers, and lakes) are under stress due to human-driven climate change and coastal activities. Satellite-based monitoring methods offer an alternative to traditional field sampling measurements for detecting changes in shallow-water benthic habitats and water biogeochemistry. However, there is lacking a global monitoring system for shallow waters at high spatial and temporal resolutions. In this talk, I will illustrate how we are building a global shallow-water monitoring system using physical analytical algorithms, modern machine learning methods, cloud-based computing, and multiple satellites (Planet Dove, Sentinel-2, and Landsat-8). This system enables us to explore the influences of human activities and terrestrial effects on the aquatic systems to protect the Earth’s resources (coral reef, freshwater, fishes) and archive a more sustainable future.
